How it works
Five criteria, one score
Travel time
Average one-way travel time per person, including a typical connection where no direct flight is likely.
Direct flights
Share of travellers with a likely direct flight, using the same conservative rule as our flight estimator.
Indicative fares
Mid-point of an economy return fare band per person, by distance. Real fares depend on season and booking date.
CO₂e
Return-flight emissions per person from UK government (DESNZ) factors, including radiative forcing.
Visa ease
Travellers who need a visa before travelling; cases we cannot confirm count half as "uncertain".
Methodology and limits
- Each criterion is scaled from 0 (best destination) to 1 (worst destination) for your group, then weighted by your priority. The score is 100 minus the weighted total.
- Balanced weights: travel time 30%, fares 25%, CO₂e 20%, direct flights 10%, visas 15%. Without passports, the visa weight is shared out over the other criteria.
- Travel times, direct-flight likelihood, fares and CO₂e come from our flight estimator model (great-circle distance, typical block times, distance-based fare bands).
- Visa needs come from our visa guide (ordinary passports, short business or tourist stays). Always confirm on official sources before booking.
- Istanbul is ranked once (IST); Sabiha Gökçen (SAW) and Kayseri (ASR) remain available in the flight estimator.
