Kekova lies 30 minutes east of Kaş. An earthquake in the second century lowered part of an ancient Lycian town into the sea, and today you can see house foundations, steps and a harbour wall through clear, shallow water. Swimming and anchoring over the ruins are not allowed, so paddling past is the closest way to see them.
We meet at Üçağız harbour for a briefing and paddling lesson. Pairs share stable double sea kayaks, and the person at the back steers, so partners have to agree on rhythm and direction. Licensed guides lead the group along the island, with a support boat following throughout.
After a swim stop in a quiet bay we paddle to Kaleköy (Simena) for lunch by the water, then climb to the castle for the view over Lycian sarcophagi. The support boat brings everyone back to Üçağız.
