The Göreme Open-Air Museum is a UNESCO-listed valley of rock-cut monasteries, chapels and refectories, carved into the soft volcanic rock between roughly the tenth and twelfth centuries. Several churches still have vivid frescoes of biblical scenes.

Your guide leads the group through the main chapels, explaining how monastic communities lived and worked here, how the frescoes were painted and why the region became such an important religious centre. Groups move in small sub-groups so that everyone can see inside the narrow chapels.

We schedule the visit early in the morning or late in the afternoon, when the site is quieter. The Dark Church, with its exceptionally well-preserved frescoes, needs a separate ticket and can be added.
