Patara beach runs for about 18 kilometres along the Lycian coast, backed by high sand dunes and the ruins of an ancient city. It is part of a protected area and an important nesting beach for loggerhead sea turtles, which keeps it free of hotels.

The group arrives in the late afternoon, walks through the ruins and over the dunes with a guide, and has time for a swim. A picnic of meze, salads, grilled dishes and fruit is set up at the edge of the dunes for sunset.

In the nesting season the beach closes to visitors after sunset to protect the turtles, so the programme is timed to leave the sand at dusk. Our team follows the reserve rules on where to set up and takes everything back out.
