Street animals are part of daily life in Turkish cities, and many are cared for by volunteer-run shelters that are always short of hands. We work with a local animal welfare association to agree a list of jobs in advance, so the day meets real needs rather than creating extra work for the staff.

Groups split into stations: assembling and weatherproofing wooden kennels from pre-cut kits, painting fences and shelter walls, preparing food portions, and socialising and walking dogs who are being prepared for adoption. Shelter staff brief everyone on handling and hygiene, and only calm, vaccinated animals are walked by volunteers.

Groups usually bring a supply donation of food and medicine bought from a list the shelter gives us. The day ends with a short talk on adoption and fostering, and many participants stay in touch with the shelter afterwards.

Accessibility

Shelters are often on unpaved ground at the edge of the city; people with animal allergies can take the kennel-building station, which is set up away from the animals.
