Ulus is where Ankara began, and most visitors to the capital never see it. Teams start at the Roman Baths with a booklet of riddles and a tablet, and work their way past the Column of Julian, the Temple of Augustus and the Hacı Bayram Mosque, through the old Ankara houses below the citadel, up to the castle walls.

Each riddle points to a detail on a building, an inscription or an object in a shop window, and the answers unlock the next location. Along the way there are tasks with local craftspeople in the citadel quarter, such as identifying spices or getting a word of Ankara slang explained by a shopkeeper.

The hunt finishes at the top of the citadel with a view across the city and tea in a restored Ottoman house, where we announce the winners. It is a good choice for groups attending a conference in Ankara who have half a day free.
